Cultural Studies : Culture and Identity in Morocco

La Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines Dhar El Mahraz - Fès fut créée en 1961. Elle avait d'abord le statut d'une annexe rattachée à la Faculté des lettres de Rabat et ne disposait que d'un seul département : celui des études arabes. Elle acquiert en 1973 le statut d'un établissement autonome mais relevant de la tutelle de l'Université Mohamed V de Rabat. Lors de la création de l'Université Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah à Fès en 1975, elle constitua avec la Faculté de droit le premier noyau de cette Université. Depuis elle n'a cessé de s'agrandir pour devenir aujourd'hui l'une des plus importantes Facultés des lettres du Royaume. Elle a pour missions fondamentales : la formation, la recherche et la diffusion de la culture nationale et universelle. Les langues d'enseignement utilisées : l'arabe, le français, l'anglais, l'espagnol, l'allemand. La Faculté abrite aussi deux lectorats : le portugais et l'italien.

-This programme is designed to introduce students to current cultural theories and give them an insight into contemporary debates in a wide range of social and humanities subjects. Particular focus is placed on an interdisciplinary study of the complex interplay of culture, society, gender, media and politics and the impact of globalization on local cultures and identities. -The programme offers students the opportunity to develop their critical understanding alongside practice in selected areas of Cultural Studies and encourages them to develop their own positions vis-à-vis the critical approaches and theories presented. But rather than merely attempting to map out theories and issues which occupy the attention of Western Cultural Studies researchers, this programme intends to re-appropriate the field of Cultural Studies through Moroccan perspectives, focusing on research areas which are deemed useful and of immediate interest and relevance to the Moroccan context. -Last but not least, the programme aims at developing the students’ competence in research in the field of cultural studies by equipping them with methodology, techniques and the conceptual tools of analysis. Thus it has a practical part which consists in not only teaching the graduates methods of research but most importantly requiring them to apply the methods on specific areas of study.

The aim of the programme is to enable students to acquire critical knowledge of, and engage in, interdisciplinary analysis of the notions of culture and identities in Morocco, which would help them to carry on with further research at the doctoral level.
